From the October 28, 2026 edition of the Satsuma Valley Standard.

Students at Silsbee Middle School recently traded their textbooks for cooking utensils as they participated in a hands-on Roving Chef event hosted by the Silsbee ISD Child Nutrition Department.

The special activity was part of October's Farm Fresh Challenge, an initiative encouraging students to learn more about locally grown foods, agriculture, and healthy eating habits.

Using fresh, Texas-grown Granny Smith apples, students rolled up their sleeves and learned valuable kitchen skills while preparing delicious homemade apple dumplings.

After their hard work in the kitchen, the young chefs enjoyed their creations topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

The event provided students with a fun and educational opportunity to explore where their food comes from while developing cooking skills, teamwork, and creativity.

Silsbee ISD praised the students for their enthusiasm and willingness to try something new, making the Roving Chef experience a sweet success!
